The Trinity County Fair Board canceled the 2008 Trinity County Fair and associated Mule Show last night at an emergency meeting, due to fire danger and the fire camp at the fairgrounds.

Trinity county cancels fair to accommodate firefighters

The Trinity County Fair in Hayfork has been canceled.

Meeting in emergency session Tuesday night, the nine-member Trinity County Fair board of directors voted unanimously to cancel the fair so firefighters could continue to use the fairgrounds as a base.

Board chairwoman Billie Miller said Tuesday that she could not remember the fair ever being canceled. It may have been canceled during World War II, she said.

“I’ve been coming for over 50 years and I don’t ever remember it being canceled,” Miller said.

The fair was scheduled to run Aug. 22-24.

Because youth have been working for months preparing sheep, cattle, chickens and other animals, the fair will still hold the junior livestock auction at 2 p.m. Aug. 23. A location for the auction hasn’t been decided, Miller said.

She said about 25 people attended the meeting, which was held in the boardroom at the fairgrounds. No one in the audience was against canceling the fair, Miller said.

Most of the discussion focused on the junior livestock auction, she said.

The fairgrounds has been a base of operations throughout July for hundreds of federal and state firefighters, as well as National Guard troops, battling wildfires near Hayfork.

“This is too big an operation, fire-wise, to ask them to get up and move someplace else,” Miller said. “We don’t want to interfere with them.”

The loss of the fair this year will hurt Hayfork and the rest of Trinity County economically, but the fires have probably offset that, Miller said.

Earlier this month, the Trinity Tribal Stomp had to be moved from Junction City to Weaverville because of fires burning in the area. The three-day event was also reduced to one day.

Miller said the board needed to decide this week on whether to cancel the fair because officials were set to begin accepting entries next Wednesday for the various competitions, such as foods and crafts.

“It’s sad, very sad. It’s something people work for all year. People were planning to bring their jellies, jams and cakes,” Miller said.

THE OLD WEST COMES ALIVE!!

Each year in August during the Trinity County Fair in Hayfork, California, the old West comes alive for everybody who has a song of the old ways in their heart.

During this short time, horses, mules, donkeys, cows, and dogs come together with saddles, wagons, chariots and carts. Then the riders, packers, drivers, and teamsters showcase their talents and skill to the watchers, the admirers, the wishful dreamers and to the kids of all ages.

Our mule show is not the Biggest show in the west. Not by a long shot. But it is the one with the most Diverse program, with the most room and in one of the most beautiful settings in the state.

Just like the old days, you can circle up your wagons and camp or RV along side your animals in the company of your friends and fellow competitors. You can even rent a stall if you wish. Everything is easy at this mule show set in a little bit of heaven, the Trinity Mountains.

And our mule show is not just for the competitors. It’s for the whole family. Along with the Mule Show, mule races, horse show, driving competition, pack scramble, and bull riding, turn the family loose at one of the last old time country fairs. There’s the carnival where some real riding gets done! Or watch the logging show, see the quilt show and auction, visit an old homestead and go wave and cheer during the Main Street parade. All these traditional fair activities showcase life in rural Northern California.
